The capital of the southern Brazilian state of Paraná, Curitiba has long been considered a model of sustainability, livability and environmental progressiveness.
Many of the city’s innovations in these areas took place under the Curitiba Master Plan, which was adopted in 1968 and led to strict controls on urban sprawl, reduced traffic in the downtown core and preservation of the city’s historic sector. The city’s innovations in public transportation include pioneering the now world-renowned bus rapid transit (BRT) system, which is used by more than 2.3 million people every day and has inspired similar systems in cities as divergent as Guatemala City, Los Angeles and Kuala Lumpur.
Smart+Connected Communities Institute spoke with Eduardo Zifchak, advisor on new technologies and solutions at the Curitiba Institute of Informatics (ICI).
