Kansas City Broadband Governance

In February 2010 Google announced its Community Fiber for Communities program. Then on March 29th 2011, Google announced Kansas City Kansas as the first recipient of its Community Fiber award. In the announcement Google mentioned two key factors that helped them in the selection process were the willingness of the utility to participate as a collaborative stakeholder (and perhaps even more important) the willingness of the Mayor and local stakeholders to participate in a collaborative community process.

What has captured the nation’s attention is that there is now a clear vision of a major digital city in which politicians, city workers, businesses and residents alike can realize the potentials for broadband economic development. A digital city empowered by bringing community collaboration and infrastructure into alignment – a platform for innovation and economic growth for “the new economy”.

The Kansas City Broadband Governance Leadership Summit will explore collaboration models that can be used by communities in planning, funding and accelerating the economic development of their respective metropolitan Internets. The Summit will also feature keynotes from leadership of both Kansas Cities.  There will also be presentations from national experts on how collaborative partnerships, innovative business models and implementation strategiesare leading the emergence of the metropolitan Internet economy. These will be the next fundamental economic cornerstones for our cities.
