Based on community member feedback, we created a few new sections on the Smart+Connected Communities Institute. Global urban planners, city managers, developers, chief information officers, system integrators and industry thought leaders asked us for more real-world examples of how cities are becoming more economically, environmentally and socially sustainable. Here is how we are meeting your requests.

ICONIC CITIES

Where are smart cities being built? How does an ecosystem of partners work with a city?  In this section you will see live city projects.  Ask questions and view resources about the project. In the next month, we will add 3 more cities in this section.

Smart18York:  18 York Street embodies what is possible with SCRE: fully integrated and  intelligent buildings.

Rampart's Avenir:  It is the first in the world to utilize cutting-edge advanced  technologies in a full scale application that demonstrates the use of  clean technology in a residential, commercial and retail context.

RESOURCES

Check out the new Resource section where we compiled a list of case studies, white papers, videos, smart city industry presentations, S+CC I webinars and podcasts.

I will continue to source case studies and white papers from the ecosystem of partners who come together to build smart connected communities. Please share your resources and city stories by uploading them to these spaces.  Also, feel free to contact me directly at jillkeefer@smartconnectedcommunities.org to share your information.

I am adding content here weekly, so come back and check often for the latest and greatest!

CITY/ ICT E-BOOK

Coming Soon!  Look for the Global City/Information and Communication Technology E-Book produced by the Smart+Connected Communities Institute.  This will provide 28 interviews with global city mayors, CIOs and city managers about technology implementation and sustainability.

We are pleased to announce our new blogger for the Smart+Connected Communities Institute. Martijn Moerbeek created the blog Strategic Perspectives in which he will share strategic focus for city managers, policy makers and city officials in planning and implementing a connected community. Moerbeek will focus on his background in construction, property development, city planning, building services, information and communication technology and technology.

A little about Moerbeek...

My interest in this topic dates  back a long time. I was born and raised in the Netherlands and choose to  study Civil Engineering as the Netherlands, more than any other country,  is shaped by how we transform nature and our surroundings to the  benefit of our citizens, the environment and the economy at large. In  reality, these are the three pillars of sustainability. From here on I  moved into project management of large building projects (most notable  inner city developments, office buildings and shopping centers) as I  wanted to understand more how buildings impact on their users and  occupants.

In  my next role I joined a major building services providers as I realized  that although architecture is important, it is really the services  within a building that make it live. As part of this, I was responsible  for their corporate strategy and I pushed for an intelligent buildings, a  workplace 2.0 and managed services proposition which really started to  form the basis of my appreciation of what S+CC can do.

In  short, I have always been a believer in how the built environment and  technology can shape and create environments that can provide answers to  many of the pressing issues that our developing and already  overburdened planet faces. I think my round experience has helped me in  pulling all the puzzle pieces together. This experience includes, an  appreciation of civil engineering, city developments, building services  and ICT, how buildings and the built environment impacts on people and  the environment, program management, engagement with policy makers,  architects and all stakeholders in the construction/technology process,  whole-life appreciation of built assets, in-depth architectural  appreciation (my wife is an architect!), the latest technological  developments and much more, and you can see how all this is now  converging into the space that you call S+CC. What's more, I have  extensive experience in penetrating new market spaces, business  development and proposition creation so I know how I can bring new and  innovative services with hard to quantify benefits to the market.

"Beyond Smart Cities: How Cities Network, Learn, Innovate" - Tim Campbell, Urban Age Institute

In addition to the webinar Learning Series, we will also be interviewing global thought leaders to share their current projects, innovative ideas, research and more.  I interviewed three urban sustainability experts and to share with you their work and ideas.

Urban Age Institute Chairman Tim Campbell is researching how cities learn. This is particularly interesting information for this online community as we facilitate learnings and best practices from city to city.  His research also touches on the challenges of governments that can be in silos, which is often discussed in the Smart+Connected Communities Institute.

Once I caught up with Tim Campbell, who was sailing from Ibiza to Gibraltar along the Spanish coast and then spending a couple of weeks in Egypt, he told me about his research for his new book "Beyond Smart Cities: How Cities Network, Learn, Innovate." Campbell conducts his research by surveys and face-to-face interviews, and the findings will be included in his book. The cities are not the largest or the smallest in terms of population, rather his subjects are average-sized cities- 1 to 5 million in population. He has interviewed up to 25 key players in each city during the face-to-face research.

"Cities are learning from each other," he said. "In this process, they are reaching out to other cities on many questions, such as how did they get ICT, talent and a lot more."

Campbell sees cities becoming autonomous and developing their own self-sustaining personalities as they start to influence national decisions.

"Cities are taking on new responsibilities," Campbell said. "They are defining their role in international trade."

Campbell continued that Europe is a good example where this influence is already happening with the EU policy and movement.  The European city regions have stronger presence and recognition with knowledge, economies, regional cities linking together, including academic institutions and city hall.

According to Campbell, cities learn in many ways, but face to face contacts that build trust is very important.  To start, the cities explore their own changemakers, gradually forming a cloud of trust, and this facilitates collaboration with various civil, public and private groups.  The "cloud of trust" became a beacon in Campbell's research. He discovered that trust is crucial with city leaders  and management.

To hear more about Tim Campbell's research, the Smart+Connected Communities Institute will host Campbell at a live webinar at noon EST February 22 via WebEx Event.
