Hello Smart+Connected Community Members,

254796_2158399475029_1097780084_32558861_2791911_a.jpgI'm thrilled to announce that I'm starting a new blog series this month for the Institute. Some of you may recognize my name from Cisco's Technology News Site. For those of you who could use a little 411 on my background, this is for you.

During the first stage of my career, I covered business news and entertainment for major outlets, including CNN and AP. I loved the hustle and glamour of it all, but I felt like something was missing. About four years ago, I attended a conference in San Francisco called SOCAP (Social Capital Markets), which brings together some of the world's top impact investors and social entrepreneurs to find solutions for successfully merging capitalism and activism. It was one of the most inspiring and educational events I've attended to this day. Feeling the energy and focus of the speakers and attendees made me see my true calling as a storyteller, and that is to spotlight today's social innovators and change makers—the creators and business leaders who are harnessing ideas and emerging technologies to benefit humanity. This is why I'm here, and this is why I'm launching the Architecting Innovation: Cities of Tomorrow blog.

The epicenter for social change lies in the world's most connected cities, the largest and most dynamic social networks available to us. (No offense, Facebook.) Underneath the overcrowding, pollution, congestion, and crime that infiltrate a number of urban areas, burgeoning communities of social entrepreneurs are surfacing. They are developing a culture that is moving away from the disaster-reactive mindset our society has been complacent with for far too long, and laying down the foundation for a proactive approach to building and sustaining businesses and urban centers.

Starting next week, I'll be covering stories about entrepreneurs, educators, and city officials who are working to build sustainabile infrastructures for supporting everyday urban processes. Through the great minds that have created floating cities, socially responsible design, and digitally enhanced schools and innovation hubs, the future of our planet is taking shape now.

On May 14, I'm traveling to Australia, where I'll be learning about that country's sustainability and tech startup initiatives. From there, I'm planning to head to Seoul, Korea (my birthplace), considered by many to be the most connected city in the world.

Please join me on this amazing journey!

Billions (in Canada) and Trillions (around the world) of dollars are being spent each year on the development and renewal of our infrastructure. Roads, bridges, homes, and [commercial, industrial, and institutional] buildings make the physical fabric of our communities. A small, yet growing portion, of this global spending goes to the systems that make this infrastructure work; such as security, mechanical, electrical, and transportation systems.

These systems have always been part of the DNA of the underlying infrastructure for our communities (nothing new there). However, the difference is that they are becoming smarter and more capable to have a profound impact on the performance of the infrastructure. Where historically these systems were subservient to the bricks, beams, and concrete they were housed in; it now seems they are being elevated in importance. The intelligent systems have now the ability to make our infrastructure come to life - and provide greater value to those that depend on it.

The great enabler of this shift is the world of information and communications technology (ICT), and more specifically the Internet and IP networks. Networks become the new addition to the DNA of our infrastructure. We have seen already numerous examples where connected and smarter infrastructure has the ability to positively impact economic, social, and environmental sustainability. My blogs have covered several of these examples, and please keep reading them as there are more to come.

The trend of smarter and more connected infrastructure is unstoppable as every sensor, device, system (and user) will become a node on the Internet and its worldwide networks. We [as in leaders in the construction, design, development, ICT industries, and many other stakeholders] have now the stewardship to channel this transformation into a direction that is repeatable and sustainable. Together we have the ability to (re)build the fabric of our communities through the intelligent use of technology and innovation. As we see this technology and innovation converge with bricks and mortar, we will end up with infrastructure that meets our, and our children’s, rapidly growing expectations in a resource constraint world.

At Cisco Plus in Canada on Wednesday May 16th, a selected group of leaders in the infrastructure industry (architects, engineers, developers, builders) will gather to discuss the implications of “clicks and mortar”, and the opportunities it will provide to all that are interesting pursuing them. The future is here, let’s now optimize and monetize it, together.

When you are visiting Cisco Plus, please attend also the Business Session “Managing Unprecedented Change with Business Transformation” by Sandy Hogan (Cisco Vice President of Americas Business Transformation) on Wednesday May 16th at 11am EST.

Cisco Plus – one of Canada’s leading IT and thought leadership conferences – will be hosted on Wednesday May 16th in Toronto’s Congress Centre. The event is designed for end-user customers and Cisco partners (Value-added Resellers, System Integrators,…) to explore the synergies between business strategy and technology. This year, we have carved out some time to co-host a series of industry break-out sessions for C-Suite business decision makers to make the conversation even more strategic and business relevant.

Gartner (2012) predicts that “by 2015, 35% of IT expenditures will be managed outside IT department’s budgets”. This means that IT is increasingly recognized for the impact it can have on addressing real business issues as opposed to being merely a cost centre and resource for necessary tools and software applications. As companies are looking for strategic ways to stay ahead, take on competition, and innovate their products and services, IT will become increasingly part of the business decision making (moving out of the Server Room and into the Board Room)—as it should be.

With this shift in mind, IDC shows that end-user customers “complain about their technology vendors in relation to their vertical or industry strategy”. Vendors and suppliers lack the industry expertise, a true understanding of the business needs, and don’t have specific industry solutions.

Cisco is moving from the Server Room to the Board Room as we’re embracing business value for industry transformation and are building industry teams with deep vertical industry expertise and matching industry solutions and value-added industry relationships.

The Cisco Plus industry break-out sessions (by invitation only) will gather senior business decision makers in the Education, Healthcare, Energy, Real Estate/Communities, and Financial Services sectors for moderated discussions on trends of change, innovation, and productivity. Each of the parallel session are hosted by one of Cisco’s foremost thought leaders and industry experts in the respective industries, and moderated by our Canadian Industry business development leaders.

Exclusive executive participation will provide for intimate and open conversations about the real issues that matter most to the representative companies and industries. Though innovation can be found at all levels within these companies and industries; the mandate for it has to be propagated by its executive leadership.

Sustainable and lasting change starts at the top: and the conversation starts … at Cisco Plus.

When you are visiting Cisco Plus, please attend also the Business Session “Managing Unprecedented Change with Business Transformation” by Sandy Hogan (Cisco Vice President of Americas Business Transformation) on Wednesday May 16th at 11am EST.

The facts on the usage and growth of social media continues to amaze me. The latest I heard was that almost 900 million people have registered accounts on Facebook (launched in 2004) and that more than 30 billion pieces of content are shared on the social network site each month. Twitter (2006) sees its membership grow by more than 1 million every day, and there are already half a billion people using the site generating nearly 200 million tweets daily, producing more than 8 Terabyte data every day (and consider that each tweet is only up to 140 characters). One hour of video is uploaded to Youtube (2005) each second. And when I write this, I am sure these facts already are obsolete. That’s Big Data, right there.

These are just a few great examples of how the consumer is driving tremendous transformation of the Internet and the networked world we live in (the consumerization of the Internet). Add in the third Internet evolution: it’s industrialization and the birth of “the Internet of Things”. It’s not just people anymore that instigate the tremendous traffic and transactions on the Internet. The IP enablement of systems and devices have extended the nodes in our networked world. More “Things” use the infrastructure to communicate—in addition to phones, tablets and computers, we see sensors, meters, power stations, street lights, busses and cars, home automation, media, gaming, signage, health systems, and many more devices in manufacturing, retail, security (and so forth) all become part of the fabric that makes the foundation of our smart and connected world.

In the next years, more than 15 billion devices will communicate over networks and the Internet—and some ICT executives predict the number will exceed 50 billion by 2020. The subsequent data volume, according to McKinsey Global Institute, is expected to grow 40% annually and will increase 44 times between now and 2020; surpassing 1 Zettabyte in U.S. Internet traffic annually by 2015 (50 times that of 2007, and roughly equivalent to 50 million Libraries of Congress).

Like cars on roads and water through pipes, all this data has to flow uninterruptedly and securely through a resilient infrastructure. The need for IP networks (and broadband) is exponentially growing and our latest generations expect full (and affordable) access to it. The enabled communication between people and people, people and machines, and between machines and machines already is providing unprecedented ways for increased productivity and value creation. Now, let’s take it further: add to all this data and constant flow of transactions the notion of intelligence and analytics. Let’s leverage the power of smarts to even further drive value back into the community, to its users, and every device and process that is reliant on it. Big Data will become rapidly Bigger as intelligence is added to it through advanced analytics and computing.

Companies in the telecom industry work frantically around the world to keep up with the rapidly growing demand. Faster hardware needs to replace the still young yet already outdated infrastructure in our existing communities. It’ll be a refresh cycle that may never finish nor slow down. Here is where new communities can substantially benefit.

New communities (like Rampart Avenir Communities) have the opportunity to lay the foundation for 1 Gb or even 10 Gb to the edge of the Internet fabric (in our homes, to our modes of transportation, and simply to every connected device). Sure, today this seems excessive, but the capital cost to do it right upfront will dwarf to the cost to upgrade later (as in a few years from now). With everything connected from inception; speaking native IP languages; where oversight and management is provided by integrated operation centers; where compute power is everywhere (cloud and fog computing); and where open access is available to everyone that wants to and can benefit from it—we truly can set the new standard as to how we can further enhance and transform environmental, economic, and social sustainability in an increasingly competitive and flatter world.

The opportunities are endless. Interesting stuff. Let’s talk more about this at the “Analytics, Big Data, and the Cloud” conference in Edmonton this week. It’s not too late to register.

Thomas Wright, Executive Director of Regional Plan Association (RPA), will  present a webinar on "Collaborative Urban Innovation" that reviews the research, planning and advocacy techniques used by this, the United States’ oldest independent regional planning organization, over its 90-year history--and also reaches out to the community to provide input on key research topics.

This presentation is part of a series of pre-"Meeting of the Minds 2012" events hosted by the Smart+Connected Communities Institute and the Regional Plan Association. In it, Wright will highlight the new urban and regional developments in communication outreach techniques affecting the U.S. tri-state Metropolitan Region (New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut) surrounding New York City.

Bannerv2.jpg

The RPA has been creating and disseminating these long-term strategic plans since the 1920s, placing the organization at the  forefront of planning techniques and technology. From simulations in the 1930s to advocacy planning in the 1960s to television documentaries  in the 1970s to electronic town hall  forums in the 2000s, RPA has been  an early adopter of communications technology in regional planning.

Today, as the RPA considers the scope, scale and ambition of a Fourth Regional Plan, it explores social media, crowd sourcing, gaming and other new communication tools for their potential in extending reach and impact. This effort, undertaken in partnership with the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, will describe the history of RPA's approach and pose questions about directions for the future.

Several Cisco technology partners have converged in the Cisco Network Applications Program lab this week in San Jose, CA.  Cisco Consulting Engineer, Luis Suau, shot the following video yesterday.  It show's David Prantl of Joulex demonstrating a new prototype app that enables a Cisco EnergyWise enabled light fixture (produced by Cisco partner, NuLEDs) to be controlled wirelessly.

LEDs can be used for low energy consumption white light.

LEDs can be used to create a light experience.

They can also act as line of sight wireless access points (more to come).

I hope you enjoy this short clip.  We'll have more to show at Cisco Live 2012 in San Diego.

Only a couple miles from Edmonton (Alberta, Canada) lies beautiful St. Albert, a town of approximately 65,000. St. Albert is one of the region's most affluent communities, and its statistics would make you want to live there. Adjacent to the populated part of the City lies 400 acres of rural land, screaming to be developed as an extension to the already popular City.

The screams were heard by Rampart Avenir Communities, founded by Gerry de Klerk (an entrepreneur immigrant from beautiful Netherlands) and his family. Last summer, De Klerk family received the final blessing from St. Albert Mayor Nolan and City Council and the planning for the build out of "Avenir" is now in full swing.

Avenir is going to be home to 10,000 new residents; containing a nice mix of single family and multifamily housing that will be immersed in green land and the existing picturesque creek that flanks the Westside of the 400 acres land. The centre of this timeless development will include commercial and retail space and become a hub in a new regional transportation network, making it easy to get in and out of Avenir.

But that's not all: Rampart Avenir Communities has set their mind to also become the most smart and connected community in the region, and a blueprint for 21st community development in Canada and the World. In addition to great design and engineering and an optimized blend of 'work, live, play, and learn', Rampart's Avenir will also have one of the fastest -- and open access -- networks into every home, business, and corner of the community. Avenir will be a connected hub in the region, and leverage the network infrastructure to deliver new experiences to the residents, generate new business opportunities for the private and public sector, enhance health, education, and community services, and be fully enabled for future opportunities and technologies.

Rampart Avenir Communities has realized that you can't build and operate 21st Century communities with 20th Century processes and eco system partners. Gerry did what not many other community developers have done before: one of the first contracts he signed was with Cisco Canada. The entrepreneurship and vision of Gerry and Rampart Avenir Communities; his willingness to break glass where necessary and appropriate; combined with Cisco's technology leadership and global experience in building smart and connected communities; and with numerous other innovative partners that don't take no for an answer, has put the endeavor on track to become a Canadian showcase and worldwide example.

Follow progress on Facebook as the community gets developed online.

There has been a lot of activity today on vacant land near the city centre of Edmonton. Public and private sector officials, citizens and press gathered in a make-shift tent to witness the groundbreaking of the Boyle Renaissance project. The crowd included renowned guests like the Mayor of Edmonton Stephen Mandel, TV personality Mike Holmes and officials at the Métis Capital Housing Corporation.

The groundbreaking was for a 90-unit residential project that will provide senior-friendly and barrier-free housing for Métis seniors and the disabled. The project is being spearheaded by Mike Holmes’ team, The Holmes Group, and his partners, and will result in an excellent facility that combines the highest quality of design, construction, energy sustainability and innovation.

Two partners joining Mike at the event were Enmax and Cisco Canada. Enmax Energy will provide the necessary infrastructure for district energy and combined heat and power, giving the building an advanced heating and power system that will use cleaner burning natural gas and meet the highest standards of building energy efficiency.

We at Cisco Canada will provide the network infrastructure that will form the “backbone” of the facility. The building will demonstrate the latest capabilities in systems convergence and provide for an intelligent, and connected, future-enabled environment. Over the top of this centralized IP infrastructure, the Boyle Renaissance will include Cisco’s Smart + Connected Communities (S+CC) Control4 Connected Home solution to deliver user friendly capabilities for the future residents of the building.

In the tent that has been put together for the groundbreaking ceremony, we are demonstrating the possibilities and capabilities of the Connected Home solution. The ability to completely control the home and advanced home applications from a single touch pad interface including turning off lights, lowering blinds adjusting room temperatures and changing channels on the TV– was proudly demonstrated by one of the Métis members.

The technology that will be implemented in the Boyle Renaissance project will provide cutting-edge and user-friendly features and functionalities that will enhance the quality of living for the project’s residents; and will make moving around a lot more effortless.

The success of this highly anticipated project (mind you, the first shovel only went into the ground today) is expected to become the model for future construction within the Métis portfolio and the City of Edmonton. I trust it will also spill over in the rest of Alberta and Canada at large.

We are all hopeful that together, we are re-calibrating the standards for 21st Century building development. Cisco Canada and The Holmes Group will continue to partner to push the envelope and move the ancient-old design and construction industry onto new, greener pastures with the latest and greatest innovation in design, construction and technology.
